Having Diversity In Your Life Is Like Going To A 7/11
…you’ll go if you have to, but bitch and moan about it later
I am old enough to remember when stores were closed on the weekends, especially on Sundays. In fact, when I lived in Ohio for a time in the early 90's, I was quite surprised to find that many stores still practiced being closed on the weekends or just on Sunday, which for those of you who are reading, its called the Blue Law.
As a child, I can clearly remember making sure we had enough milk to last us through the weekend, because if we ran out, tough luck, you ate your cereal dry, and nothing is more cooler than a bowl of dry corn flakes or cheerios on a Saturday morning while you watched cartoons.
Anyways, then these stores called 7/11's popped up.
They were open from 7am to 11pm. Not too many stores were open that late. Most places as I was growing up closed promptly at 5pm. Nowadays, most 7/11's are open 24hrs. They are also known as convenience stores. Why? Well, they are there for your convenience, in case you are in a pinch.
However, you’ll pay a hefty price on that emergency loaf of bread or gallon of milk.
Now, where was I going with this? Oh yeah, right…
For some, diversity is a convenience, meaning that there are those who will participate in “ diversity” but will bitch and moan about it later.
And I’ll give you some real life examples to prove my point.
- Some will go to Asian buffets, stuff themselves silly with chicken chow mein( because its all-you-can-eat) and complain how there are TOO MANY CHINKS in the neighborhood.
- Some will complain about the “ spicks” in the neighborhood, as those same spicks are doing that person’s yard and giving that lawn a good manicure.
- Speaking of manicures, some will go and get their nails and nasty feet done( to remove their nasty callouses) all the while bitching about how these same people need to speak English.
- Some will go and enjoy an event and enjoy being entertained by a black comedian or black artist, but still have reservations about that same black comedian or artist living in their neighborhood.
Are you beginning to see a pattern?
Are you beginning to see a particular group that are the moaners and bitchers of said events?
Are you beginning to see “ yourself” in these scenarios?
Heres another scenario you might see yourself in…
You go to your yoga classes in a religious fashion, get all decked out in your American Apparel or Lulu outfit you bought online, take your breathing classes, sit proudly in a lotus position, end your emails and correspondence with “ namaste”, yet, have no real clue as to the purpose of yoga, but you do it to look trendy.
For those you use the word “ namaste” let me clue you into a little secret…
When you place your palms together and bow to one another, you are “bowing” to the Divine or God in that person.
If you claim to be a Christian, you are violating your Christian faith.
The saying of namaste is incompatible with the Christian faith. Human beings are not gods. There is only one God, and He does not share His glory (Isaiah 42:8). Bowing to or showing any sort of respect to any false god is idolatry (Exodus 20:3). Depending on the version of Hinduism, Hindu beliefs are polytheistic or pantheistic or a mixture of both. Namaste seems to come from the more pantheistic forms of Hinduism that sees everything and everyone as god.
What was I talking about again? Oh yeah, right…
See, for some, its a “ convenience.”
And for some…
Its an “ honor” and we embrace and envelop them into our lives.
We EMBRACE all of Gods creatures.
Not from 7am to 11pm.
We embrace them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We embrace them when we appreciate their tenacity and hard work.
We embrace them when we consume their cultures and food and traditions.
We give them honor. We “ give” of ourselves. We consider them our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.
What do you give?
Or, do you take? Or criticize? Or demean? Or slander? Or deny? Or abuse?
Especially when you’re stuffing yourself silly with the egg roll or dim sum from your favorite Chinese buffet.
